The Future of Augmented Reality (Infographic)

The Future of Augmented Reality (Infographic)

When you think of augmented reality, Pokémon Go might be the first thing to come to mind. But AR isn't just for games. This innovative tech is making an impact on a number of industries.

According to recent research by Lumus Vision, while AR video games are expected to reach potential revenues of $11.6 billion by 2025, other industries are not far behind. By 2025, the AR and virtual reality space in the healthcare industry is predicted to reach $5.1 billion, engineering $4.7 billion, real estate $2.6 billion and retail $1.6 billion.

When it comes to real estate and home improvement, one of the biggest obstacles people face is not being able to visualize their new home. In 2016, 51 percent of consumers said they put off home improvements because they couldn't imagine what the finished product would look like. AR and VR are potential solutions. With VR, people can take a virtual tour through a potential home, and with AR they can place various furniture items in a room to get a glimpse of what it'd look like.

Retail is also an exciting industry when it comes to AR. For example, AR in retail can help people imagine various outfits on them before actually buying. Seventy-one percent of consumers say they would be more likely to shop at a store if AR were offered, and 61 percent would choose a store with AR experiences over a store without.

Why Tech Companies Need a Code of Ethics for Software Development

This post was created to help you bring system out of confusion so you can get the best out of your business and enter the market full force.

First of all, yes, you do need a logo, and it doesn't really matter how big or small your business is. Even if you're making a craft soap and sell it to your relatives and friends, you still need a logo. If you plan to monetize an idea, you need a logo for it. Otherwise your work, your efforts, your image and your future brand belong to everyone, like grapes at a grocery store. But most importantly, the final design you come up with should be effective enough to promote your business and get you that place in the sun. Here are a few tips that will make the whole process easier and more fun.

1. Get inspired

The first step to a killer logo is an idea. So start feeding your brain with new impressions and experiences. Use anything that works for you. Try hiking and gain inspiration from nature. Or visit an art gallery. Meditation, photography, action sports… In a nutshell, any kind of activity that fills you up with energy and joy may help you get that revolutionary idea...

13 Most Useless Job Skills Employers Don’t Want Anymore

13 Most Useless Job Skills Employers Don't Want Anymore

For millions of Americans, there's nothing more frightening than waking up one day and discovering you're redundant. You've suddenly become replaceable, and the world has moved on without you. What are you supposed to do? In all likelihood, you've invested many years in a specific career path. You've sunk tens of thousands into degrees and certificates. Perhaps you've even given up more lucrative jobs to chase a passion.

Then, in one fell swoop, the rug has been pulled out from under you. It's a scary thought. But for more and more people, it's becoming a reality. The jobs of today are not the jobs of tomorrow. And the job skills you needed yesterday are not the job skills you need today — or tomorrow.

Jobs and skills

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell which way the economic winds will shift. We have an idea, though. Truck drivers are probably going to be out of work in the near future, for example. And most factory work is being automated. This means a lot of people need to take stock of their experience, skills, and abilities to keep pace.

The first step is to take a look at your resume and purge all of the unnecessary or redundant information. That starts with job skills that no longer apply. If you want the jobs of today or tomorrow, you need to frame yourself as an employee who's ready for those jobs. There are many ways in which you'll want to take special care in preparing your resume, but a good place to start is by focusing on the key skills that will get you the job.

Regarding the following skills, unless an employer is specifically looking for them, it's probably best to leave them off of your CV. Here are 13 job skills employers aren't looking for anymore...

Never, Ever Give A Recruiter Your Salary Details -- Do This Instead

Never, Ever Give A Recruiter Your Salary Details -- Do This Instead

Dear Liz,

I'm having a hard time keeping my salary history to myself, because recruiters can be very demanding. They almost always ask me, "What are you earning now?" within two or three minutes of starting a phone conversation. How can I politely say, "I don't want to share that information" without losing my chances at a job?..

Why Startup Founders Must Go Slow to Go Fast

Why Startup Founders Must Go Slow to Go Fast

"We hear it all the time: speed, speed, speed, speed. Speed is important. But while we fully believe that getting a product into customers' hands fast is critical to the success of any startup, if you try to do it insanely fast, you're going to make so many mistakes that, ultimately, you'll slow yourself down."

Those are the words of Will Herman, co-author of The Startup Playbook: Founder-to-Founder Advice from Two Startup Veterans. Herman, along with co-author Rajat Bhargava, argues that the way we talk about startups is all wrong...

How to Use LinkedIn to Find Your Next Job

How to Use LinkedIn to Find Your Next Job

If you're in transition and looking for a new job or you're contemplating changing jobs, there's nothing more powerful than learning how to be efficient and effective on LinkedIn. Being listed on LinkedIn is a must. A study by Microsoft revealed that 70 percent of employers have rejected job candidates because of information they found online about those candidates. Yet, the same study suggests that 85 percent of employers say a positive online reputation influences their decision. Those are pretty convincing numbers.

Here are some facts:

  • Recruiters and employers prefer dealing with applicants they can check out and trust.
  • People spend more time on social media than on e-mail. LinkedIn is in the social media for business.
  • The internet can make or break your image.

The power of LinkedIn lies in the fact that you can connect with people who influence decision-making regarding whom to hire. In turn, you too can research the company you're targeting, the hiring manager there and even the culture of the company. Sixty percent of hiring decisions are based on a candidate's fit with the company's culture...

Never 'Sell Yourself' On A Job Interview -- Do This Instead

Never 'Sell Yourself' On A Job Interview -- Do This Instead

Dear Liz,

I love your advice. It's so different from most of the job search advice I hear. I go to a job search networking group and they still share job search advice from twenty years ago.

One of the things that bugs me the most is that they always say, "You have to sell yourself on a job interview!" They tell us to push our qualifications in the interviewer's face and brag. I can't do that. It's demeaning. I need your help interviewing in a natural way without bragging or telling the interviewer why they need to hire me...

No, You're Not Crazy -- The Hiring Process Is Broken

No, You're Not Crazy -- The Hiring Process Is Broken

Dear Liz,

I job hunted in 2014. It took a while but the process wasn't terrible.

In that job search I talked to recruiters, applied for jobs online, gave some friends my resume to pass around and had a bunch of interviews. I don't remember having more than three interviews with any one company before receiving either a job offer or a "no thanks" message.

Now I'm job hunting again. This time out, it's different. I've been getting a reasonable number of bites from employers but once I get into the pipeline, they take their time. They act like they don't understand people have bills to pay. The recruiting process is so slow and insulting. Their attitude seems to be, "If you don't like it, too bad. Qualified applicants are everywhere."

I know that's not true, but it's hard to maintain my confidence sometimes when somebody tells me, "We'll contact you by Monday" and then three weeks go by while they ignore my voicemail and email messages.

One employer kept me waiting six weeks between the first and second interview. I was shocked even to hear back from them after such a long time.

One company wanted me to fill out a 30-page questionnaire before they would even talk to me.

Another firm wanted me to work for three days for free so they could "check out my work" before hiring me.

What's the story, Liz? Is it me, or is the hiring process completely broken? ...

5 Tips on How to Successfully Market to Millennial Moms

5 Tips on How to Successfully Market to Millennial Moms

Despite what marketers may think, the way into a millennial's wallet goes beyond employing such strategies as the use of trendy colors and Instagram-worthy photos.

Who are these millennials, anyway? The Wall Street Journal has called them "a group of people who are building major companies, altering the way we work and live and challenging long-held notions of family and society."  But the Journal also (last year) berated itself for treating them "like an alien species" by describing them with too many "snotty"  remarks.

I, meanwhile, consider "millennial" the best shorthand option for referring to people born between 1981 and 1997. But let's get a little more detailed …

Want Your App to Fail? If You Ignore These 3 Keys to Testing, Failure Is a Safe Bet.

Want Your App to Fail? If You Ignore These 3 Keys to Testing, Failure Is a Safe Bet.

All startup founders know that testing is important -- or do they? An October 2017 TestPlant study reported that 40 percent of the 750 developers surveyed admitted not testing their software because they felt so pressured to release it as early as possible.

What's behind this disconnect? Unfortunately, it's part of a startup culture for app developers, particularly first-timers who feel a sense of urgency to rush their apps to market. But this quick launch can lead to failure.

With a swell of apps regularly being released and updated, it's normal to feel that you're losing ground with every day you don't have your platform customer-facing. But in fact you have only one chance at a first impression, and that is particularly applicable to this highly competitive field.

The 15 highest-paying jobs in tech, according to LinkedIn

The 15 highest-paying jobs in tech, according to LinkedIn

IT jobs require a special set of skills. So it's not surprising that IT, software, and other tech gigs have a reputation for being highly compensated.

But which IT and software roles snag the highest pay?

In order to find out, LinkedIn provided Business Insider with data collected through the site's salary tool, which asks verified members to submit their salary and collects data on wages.

The jobs all hail from the IT and software industries. C-suite titles were cut from the search. LinkedIn calculated median base salaries, as well as median total salaries, which included additional compensation like annual bonuses, sign-on bonuses, stock options, and commission.

While tech, software, and IT jobs tend to accrue high salaries, LinkedIn's findings indicate that the biggest pay days come with senior positions.

These 15 positions all make a median base salary of at least $100,000 a year. Bear in mind that the data is self-reported by users, so might be subject to some variation.

Here are the highest-paying jobs in software and IT:...

5 Tactics Essential to Building a 6-Figure Online Business

5 Tactics Essential to Building a 6-Figure Online Business

In 2015, customers spent $107 billion on online courses, according to Global Industry Analysts. The number of internet users increased from 738 million in 2000 to 3.2 billion in 2015, according to the International Telecommunication Union. In 2017, 2.46 billion people used social media every day, according to Statista. The internet and social media have created an immense opportunity for entrepreneurs. Never has there been a time during which entrepreneurs can market their business to a global audience as they can today.

While the opportunity is great, there are too few entrepreneurs and companies capitalizing on all this potential. According to research firm Clutch, 46 percent of U.S. small businesses still didn't have a website as recently as  2016. Millions of potential leads are lost by not spending a few thousand dollars to create a foundation online.
