THE VOICE IN RETAIL REPORT: How brands can benefit as voice streamlines product discovery, drives sales, and boosts customer loyalty

THE VOICE IN RETAIL REPORT: How brands can benefit as voice streamlines product discovery, drives sales, and boosts customer loyalty

Not too long ago, if your friend had a smart speaker like Amazon's Alexa or Google's Assistant in their living room, it seemed like a rare novelty. Within a matter of months, however, smart speakers have started becoming household staples — and they're still only at a fraction of their growth potential...

RightHand Robotics debuts a new pick and place system

RightHand Robotics debuts a new pick and place system

Reliable pick and place systems have long been a kind of Holy Grail among industrial robotics. The job of moving products in and out of bins is high among the jobs that many warehouse and fulfillment centers are looking to automate.

For a few years now, RightHand Robotics has been one of the more exciting startups in the space. The company has managed to drum up $34 million in funding from investors like Menlo Ventures, GV and Playground Global. This week at the ProMat conference in Chicago, the company unveiled RightPick2, the second generation of its piece-picking solution...

This Hong Kong Startup Uses Technology To Change Everyday Grocery Shopping

This Hong Kong Startup Uses Technology To Change Everyday Grocery Shopping

Despite being one of the financial capitals of the world, Hong Kong has traditionally lagged when it comes to cultivating game-changing startups. Among the list of reasons for this includes the high cost of living, lack of government support and an immature ecosystem to retain talent. One commonly overlooked deterrent is the fact that Hong Kong, by most world standards, is already highly efficient—there simply aren't many outstanding problems that need solving. Real estate developer-turned-entrepreneur Clarence Ling was fully aware of the challenges that Hong Kong presents for an aspiring startup founder, but instead of leaving the city he stayed and took on the challenge.

"Hong Kong people, in general, in my point of view, are still stuck in the era of our most glorious days—back in the '80s, '90s, even 2000s. And most successful people are from real estate and finance in Hong Kong. The younger kids, teenagers, they have someone new to look up to—be in Pony MaJack Ma from China or Jeff BezosElon Musk—in Hong Kong, we're still talking about Li Ka-shing. It hurts me."

Ling, is the cofounder and chief development officer of Ztorea Hong Kong-based e-commerce startup selling groceries. Ling has a broad entrepreneurial and investing background. Apart from managing Kwai Hung Group, a private property development company, he's also helped dozens of overseas companies to expand in Asia, and he's also an active investor in more than 20 startups globally, including Lalamove, which is either at or close to becoming a unicorn.

Unconventional beginnings in a well developed niche

In late 2014, after recognizing that the B2C landscape in Hong Kong was reaching a tipping point, Ling and his cofounder stumbled upon a Singaporean e-commerce company called RedMart. Ling immediately recognized that the websites of the traditional brick-and-mortar grocers in Hong Kong were antiquated at best and in dire need of an upgrade. Despite pushback from friends and family, he decided to press forward and jump headfirst into launching Ztore.

"Rental in Hong Kong is very, very expensive, compared to Singapore," Ling says. "A lot of investors actually were quite shocked that we chose an online supermarket as an entry point rather than doing electronics or fashion—these with much higher margins. But we thought if we wanted to change the customer behavior, we had to pick something that affects Hong Kong people's daily lives."...

How to Analyze the Cause of a Ranking Crash

How to Analyze the Cause of a Ranking Crash

In 2012, I had a large client that was ranked in the top position for most of the terms that mattered to them.

And then, overnight, their ranking and traffic dropped like a rock.

Have you ever experienced this? If so, you know exactly how it feels.

The initial shock is followed by the nervous feeling in the pit of your stomach as you contemplated how it will affect your business or how you'll explain it to your client.

After that is the frenzied analysis to figure out what caused the drop and hopefully fix it before it causes too much damage.

In this case, we didn't need Sherlock Holmes to figure out what happened. My client had insisted that we do whatever it took to get them to rank quickly. The timeframe they wanted was not months, but weeks, in a fairly competitive niche.

If you've been involved in SEO for a while, you probably already know what's about to go down here.

The only way to rank in the timeline they wanted was to use tactics that violated Google's Webmaster Guidelines. While this was risky, it often worked. At least before Google released their Penguin update in April 2012.

Despite my clearly explaining the risks, my client demanded that we do whatever it took. So that's what we did.

When their ranking predictably tanked, we weren't surprised. Neither was my client. And they weren't upset because we explained the rules and the consequences of breaking those rules.

They weren't happy that they had to start over, but the profits they reaped leading up to that more than made up for it. It was a classic risk vs. reward scenario.

Unfortunately, most problems aren't this easy to diagnose. Especially when you haven't knowingly violated any of Google's ever-growing list of rules

In this article, you'll learn some ways you can diagnose and analyze a drop in ranking and traffic...

For a monthly subscription fee, this startup will send out customized gifts to current and prospective clients at scale

In today's noisy, fast-paced world, finding a way to let clients and potential customers know that they are top of mind can be a major challenge for companies.

Enter Sendoso, a 2.5-year-old, San Francisco-based online-to-offline startup that promises to source, store and ship anything a business ever needs to send — and track its return on investment, to boot.

How does it work? According to CEO and co-founder Kris Rudeegraap, Sendoso, founded in 2016, already has 110 full-time employees, hundreds of vendor relationships and six warehouses, including its biggest, an 80,000-square-foot space in Las Vegas.

It also has relationships with dozens of workers on whom it can call to help it as it needs them and, as crucially, it integrates with Salesforce, Marketo and Engagio, among other platforms where companies largely live...

Can Blockchain Technology Make Agriculture Safer?

Can Blockchain Technology Make Agriculture Safer?

Most of what we've heard about blockchain technology has been in the realm of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. But this new technology will have wide-ranging business applications as true peer-to-peer networks become more widespread.

Smart contracts built on blockchain technology may eliminate the need for middlemen. Energy grids could use that tech to increase cybersecurity. And aerospace suppliers look to blockchain as a potential investment in keeping track of their supply lines and boosting efficiencies.

But perhaps one of the most unexpected – and impactful – applications of blockchain may be in agriculture.

Blockchains could ensure vegetable quality

The blockchain is a byproduct of Bitcoin, but its application range is infinite. Blockchain can have a significant impact beyond the internet, and it is likely the concept will be applied to all industries in the future. One example of this potential is in quality assurance – a process all businesses must contend with.

An active example of the impact of blockchain technology on agriculture is the increase in traceability of agricultural products. In Aya-cho, Higashi Morokata-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, demonstration experiments are being carried out using blockchain technology to assure the quality of organic agricultural products. The data recorded includes who farmed the product, condition of the soil, nature of the pesticides and production environment. This proves the quality of the product.  Agriculture experts are taking notice of these products, too, which trade at almost twice the market price due to the spotlight on them.

Exclusive: Your brain is lying to you about Super Bowl ads. This neuroscientist can prove it

Exclusive: Your brain is lying to you about Super Bowl ads. This neuroscientist can prove it

The best commercial of the 2018 Super Bowl according to the almighty USA Today Ad Meter was Amazon's "Alexa Loses Her Voice," a hilarious look at what might happen if certain celebrities were given free reign to voice the digital assistant. The Ad Meter, which for many CMOs is the only measurement that counts, is based on public votes. You liked it. I liked it. We all liked it.

Or did we?

Paul Zak, PhD, cofounder and CEO of Immersion Neuroscience, says there's a big difference between the Super Bowl commercials we say we love, and the ones our brains actually love, that we'll remember, and will most likely lead us to actually buying the product.

Which is, uh, kind of the whole point...

Japan’s Society 5.0: Going Beyond Industry 4.0

Japan's Society 5.0: Going Beyond Industry 4.0

Germany's Industry 4.0 is a well-known buzzword. Japan has now introduced Society 5.0. Is this a mere one-step-ahead game, or is there more behind?

Industry 4.0

As the name already indicates, Industry 4.0 is looking mainly into industrial production. Its main idea is the information exchange between companies down to the machines and processes.

Nowadays, not only machines but virtually all objects are equipped with sensors that produce information about their status or location. This means that there is much more information is available than there was before. As the interfaces are not yet clearly defined, the amount of information increases and becomes impossible to be processed by humans...

The AI market is growing, but how quickly is tough to pin down

If you work in tech, you've heard about artificial intelligence: how it's going to replace uswhether it's over-hyped or not and which nations will leverage it to prevent, or instigate, war.

Our editorial bent is more clear-cut: How much money is going into startups? Who is putting that money in? And what trends can we suss out about the health of the market over time?

So let's talk about the state of AI startups and how much capital is being raised. Here's what I can tell you: funding totals for AI startups are growing year-over-year; I just don't know precisely how quickly. Regardless, startups are certainly raising massive sums of money off the buzzword.

To make that point, here are just a few of the biggest rounds announced and recorded by Crunchbase in 2018:....

AWS launches WorkLink to make accessing mobile intranet sites and web apps easier

AWS launches WorkLink to make accessing mobile intranet sites and web apps easier

If your company uses a VPN and/or a mobile device management service to give you access to its intranet and internal web apps, then you know how annoying those are. AWS today launched a new product, Amazon WorkLink,  that promises to make this process significantly easier.

WorkLink is a fully managed service that, for $5 per month and user, allows IT admins to give employees one-click access to internal sites, no matter whether they run on AWS or not.

After installing WorkLink on their phones, employees can then simply use their favorite browser to surf to an internal website (other solutions often force users to use a sub-par proprietary browser). WorkLink the goes to work, securely requests that site and — and that's the smart part here — a secure WorkLink container converts the site into an interactive vector graphic and sends it back to the phone. Nothing is stored or cached on the phone and AWS says WorkLink knows nothing about personal device activity either. That also means when a device is lost or stolen, there's no need to try to wipe it remotely because there's simply no company data on it...

The Top 10 Side Gigs for 2019 (Infographic)

The Top 10 Side Gigs for 2019 (Infographic)

The term "gig economy" seems ubiquitous now, but it was reportedly coined just 10 years ago, when people began picking up side jobs for extra cash during the 2008-2009 financial crisis. Freelance labor marketplace TaskRabbit, hotel industry disruptor Airbnb and rideshare giant Uber all came onto the scene during that span, and today, nearly four in 10 Americans have a side hustle, according to a 2018 Bankrate.com survey.

If you're considering new ways to make extra cash, a report published today from Fundera, a small-business loan marketplace, lists 10 top options to consider this year. To narrow down the side gigs, the report used raw data from four large freelancer sites -- Upwork, PeoplePerHour, Guru and SimplyHired -- and analyzed demand, pay and client ratings. Software development, design and writing received top billing, as those areas tend to offer many freelance opportunities and above-average pay levels...

Grow Brand Value While Accelerating Revenue Growth

Grow Brand Value While Accelerating Revenue Growth

Brands have become an essential component in how consumers purchase, perceive and learn about products and services. This means that increasing brand licensing value is critical to any brand's successful progression. Fortunately, there are three proven ways that will set you on the path to effectively increase the licensing value of your brand.

Related: Extend Your Brand's Reach With Licensing

1. Strengthen your brand's reputation.

When consumers are delighted by a particular brand experience, they begin to bond emotionally with the brand. They become brand loyalists and advocates -- buying the brand more often and recommending it to others. This behavior serves to build the brand's reputation. In fact, consumers will often purchase a brand for the first time because of its reputation. The brand, therefore, adds value and certainty to a product made with unknown hands.

The stronger a brand's reputation, the higher the value of the brand and the greater revenue it will drive for its owner. Prospective licensees want to gain rights to brands with the strongest reputation as these are the brands consumers demand and retailers prefer most. The stronger the brand, the higher likelihood that the licensed products will sell in and sell through.

2. Increase your brand's expandability.

Brand loyalists and advocates look to their preferred brands to deliver more and better products year after year. When this occurs, the brand gains permission to expand into categories that complement its original offering. For example, the Mr. Clean brand, owned by P&G, was launched in 1963 as the first household liquid cleaner. Over time, the brand gained a strong reputation for its ability to clean effectively on a variety of surfaces.

By delighting its consumers, Mr. Clean built significant brand loyalty and allegiance. When asked, consumers told the Mr. Clean brand team that they expected the Mr. Clean brand to offer additional products that simplified and enhanced the household cleaning experience. To satisfy these consumers, Mr. Clean developed a line of branded mops, brooms and brushes. These products were met with enthusiasm and over time, consumers demanded even simpler and more effective ways to clean their homes...

Trust (Not Sales Ability) Is of Massive Importance for Landing Coaching Clients. Here's Why

Trust (Not Sales Ability) Is of Massive Importance for Landing Coaching Clients. Here's Why

Coaching used to be almost exclusively associated with sports, but that's no longer the case. Today, you'll find expert coaches in almost every field you can think of who are qualified and ready to help you achieve your goals. And that of course includes business.

So, whether you need help running your company, advice on how to become a better leader or even assistance in becoming more productive in your personal life, chances are there's a coach who can provide you stellar support.

Related: Coaching Over Managing: Motivate Your Team

Sometimes, though, coaches need a little coaching themselves -- especially when it comes to landing new clients. Those coaches might be led astray by focusing on their sales skills or their use of key marketing tactics. But those areas of emphasis don't necessarily work. I learned this when I reached out to several professional coaches. Talking to them, I found that sales ability is only a small part of the equation. What successful coaches really need to gain (and keep) clients is trust -- here's why:

Honesty clarifies your unique value proposition.

Sales and trust can sometimes seem like two very opposite concepts. Whether it's deserved or not, the world of sales and marketing has a reputation for being inherently dishonest.

The thing is, coaching is a relationship -- and dishonesty rarely bodes well for any type of long-term relationship. Trust, in fact, is consistently listed as one of the most important aspects of a relationship, with consistency in words and behavior being a key component.

In an email exchange, Bettina Buhr, a personal branding consultant and coach based in Germany, explained to me that, "When meeting with a prospective client, coaches need to clearly and honestly define their unique value.

"You might be able to impress someone with your sales skills up front," Buhr continued, "but if you aren't honest about what you can truly offer, the facade will quickly fall away once they become your client and you fail to meet [their] expectations. This will erode trust and ruin your potential for retaining clients."

I have to agree with Buhr because from my experience, what you say and do during the "pitching" process will have a direct impact on what clients expect once you become their coach. Making false promises in an attempt to oversell, rather than focusing on the value you can actually provide, will lead only to disillusionment and canceled contracts.

Going "behind the curtain" highlights transparency.

Each coach -- and each client -- is unique. As such, your coaching style likely won't be a perfect match for everyone. That's not a bad thing. In fact, this is part of the unique value proposition you have which will make you the perfect fit for certain clients...
