How Two Entrepreneurs Used Social Media to Create a Multi-million Dollar Teeth-whitening Brand

How Two Entrepreneurs Used Social Media to Create a Multi-million Dollar Teeth-whitening Brand

It was during a casual dinner in 2014 that childhood friends Alex Tomic and Nik Mirkovic decided to create a teeth-whitening brand. Little did they know that their brainchild, HiSmile, which they started by pooling savings of 20,000 Australian dollars ($15,000), would make them two of Australia's youngest self-made multimillionaires and part of the Forbes' 2018 30 Under 30 rich list—all in a span of less than four years.

The Gold Coast residents Tomic, 25, and Mirkovic, 23, say HiSmile was born out of their observations of the oral cosmetics industry, and they noticed the absence of brand and focus in the market. This is why "we felt we had a unique approach to tackling one of the world's biggest industries."...

The Big Question Is Are You in the Right Job?

The Big Question Is Are You in the Right Job?

Have you ever asked yourself if you are in the right job? How about if, and when you should quit a job? You need to know when it's simply time to double-down or move on from a position.

The first thing you need to do is a self-assessment. You need to ask yourself the right questions. You need to determine if the problem is the job itself, or you. Make the effort to take a serious look at if it's you or the job. This assessment will focus your energy on fixing the right thing. Either the job or your approach and attitude about it.

If it is your attitude and approach, and there are benefits to the job, commit and anchor in. If you think the role is wrong, look at where you want to be, what other people are doing, where people are making money. Make a concentrated effort to move to the position that you want and the one that will serve you best...

Why Your Startup Should Skip the Seed Round

Why Your Startup Should Skip the Seed Round

When enterprise cloud startups meet with us, one of the first questions we ask is: How much capital do you need?

The companies we meet with are typically pre-product with small teams, around two to 10 people. They almost invariably say they need a $2 million seed round, for the simple reason that, today, just about all seed rounds are $2 million.

Our next question is: What can you accomplish with $2 million? If they're honest, they'll say, "Not enough."

3 Tips for Advancing Your Career as a Woman

3 Tips for Advancing Your Career as a Woman

Nowadays, a candidate's acceptance of a new employment position is likely preceded by a quick company Google search or a scouring of previous employees' Glassdoor reviews. As a female entering any industry, let alone one dominated by men, as most industries still are -- you should make sure that your first step toward achieving success as a female professional is to closely vet the company you're thinking of joining.

Sometimes, all that involves is a bit of research: What benefits does the company offer? Does it have a good maternity leave policy? What about mentorship programs? How many female leaders hold management positions? These are crucial questions; and if the answers are lacking, they're information points you'll need to flag before you accept a job -- even making them part of the interview or early research process...

Harnessing the Hacker Mindset

Harnessing the Hacker Mindset

Editor's note: Keren Elazari, cybersecurity analyst, author and researcher, will give the closing keynote address at CSX Europe 2018, to take place 29-31 October in London, UK. Elazari recently visited with ISACA Now to discuss the hacking "ethos," whether data privacy should be considered a right or a privilege, and more. The following is a transcript, edited for length and clarity.

ISACA Now: What prompted you to take an interest in cybersecurity research and analysis?
In one word: Curiosity. Always asking more questions, always poking fingers into things I don't understand – I believe that is the quintessential hacker mindset and that is what has always defined who I am. Even as a child, I was always really interested in technology and curious about how things worked. I would break things, take them apart, crawl under the table to disconnect the cables and see what would happen if I put them somewhere else.

An important milestone for me was the movie "Hackers" that came out in 1995. I always talk about this movie as my inspiration, because it really gave me a context for hacking: hacking as a calling, a life choice. It showed me a hacker could be a hero of a story, and that hero could be a high school girl just like me! In the movie, it's Angelina Jolie, pretty much the coolest person in the world from my point of view. Everything was exactly right for me in that cultural moment; it was exactly what I needed to see and hear to understand it was my calling. That's why I am proud to call myself a hacker. My idea of a hacker is perhaps, somewhat romantic, but I consider the friendly and ethical hackers out there in the world as a vital part of culture, society and the economy, pushing forward the evolution of technology and acting as a much needed "immune system" for the information age.

I wear many professional hats: strategic advisor, business analyst, academic researcher and author. I've worked as a security architect, risk management consultant and product manager; yet in any role and organization, I've always held that hacker–hero ethos at heart.

ISACA Now: In what areas must the cybersecurity workforce make the most strides if organizations are going to be equipped to deal with the evolving threat landscape?
Despite widespread automation of technology and defensive security solutions, I do believe there always will be room for humans in the equation. As AI, big data, algorithms, automation, machine learning, and adaptable technology become more prevalent, 70-80% of cybersecurity tasks will be automated and drilled down to a science. That means defenders must become more like data scientists and feel at ease with managing and utilizing such tools and leveraging them to gain a better understanding of threats and the security posture of organizations...

8 laptops for people who want the absolute best

8 laptops for people who want the absolute best

Sometimes you just want the best.

No matter the price, and no questions asked.

If you want the best possible laptop experience, you need to think about four main things:

  • A slim premium design and materials
  • A sharp display
  • An Intel Core i7 processor
  • And at least 16GB of RAM

It's tough to say which of these 4 checklist items matter the most – each person might value one particular element more than another. One of the factors that makes the biggest difference, in my opinion, is the screen resolution. After using laptops and computer monitors with high-end 1400p and 4K resolutions, laptops with standard less-sharp 1080p resolutions feel decidedly less premium.

Keen spec-watchers out there might argue that you don't need a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, as it can be overkill for everyday computer tasks. For the average user, many would say an Intel Core i5 gives the best bang for the buck.

Normally, I'd agree. But these laptops aren't for people who care whether they're getting the best value. We're talking about machines that will give you the confidence that you're getting the smoothest and best performance for anything you might want to do on a computer, and a Core i7 will deliver just that.

That's also why you can't settle for 8GB of RAM. You'll need 16GB to ensure smooth and snappy performance, especially if you like to run lots of memory-hungry apps at the same time, or keep dozens of browser tabs open.

With that in mind, we set out to find the "best-of-breed" laptops on the market, the ones that best combine our four criteria to provide the ultimate laptop experience.

Note that I upgraded the storage on some of these machines to 500GB if their standard configurations come with 250GB. If you don't think you'll need 500GB of storage, you can always downgrade to a smaller storage option.

Check out the eight laptops, ranked in order of my preference, that will give you a premium, top-of-the-line experience:..

How to Launch a New Brand: 4 Tips that Work

How to Launch a New Brand: 4 Tips that Work

A new brand -- your new brand -- has got to make a splash in the market if it's going to be successful. You've got to stand out in a crowd that's oversaturated with brands that people are already invested in. So, how do you get people interested in what you've got to say and offer if you're the new kid on the block?

The answer is that you've got to create an awesome launch for your new brand. You've spent countless hours creating your business and your brand, so you need to spend time planning an exciting launch, as well.

A well-developed plan will help your grand opening or your product launch go off without a hitch. Here's how to launch a new brand and four tips that work whether you're starting from scratch or re-branding.

Give yourself enough time.

Your brand launch is an important event. People usually spend six months to a year planning their weddings, so treat your brand the same way. Don't launch your entire company in just a couple weeks; give yourself more time. Your rollout should begin in the very early stages of your branding process.

Giving yourself more time also helps to develop hype for your brand while giving you ample time to make sure all the moving pieces are in order.

Ted Baker used a countdown timer for a launch for its men's and women's clothing; and as can be seen, the countdown is over 30 days away.

Tips and Tools Your Startup Can Use to Maximize Your International Business

Tips and Tools Your Startup Can Use to Maximize Your International Business

The world of digital business is increasingly a world without borders. Any barriers, for example, preventing an ecommerce store in Chicago selling to a customer in Bangalore, or a marketing agency in London hiring a freelancer in Vietnam, are likely to be merely logistical or administrative in nature.

Related: The Right Way to Grow Your Business Internationally

That's a good thing, because if you restrict your business to the country where you're physically located, you could be leaving a considerable amount of money on the table. According to the Small Business Administration, 96 percent of the world's consumers now live outside the United States, and two-thirds of the world's purchasing power is based in foreign countries. No matter where your company is based, the benefits of international expansion are difficult to deny.

Traditionally, cost, risk and logistical challenges have discouraged online businesses from selling to or working with customers from anywhere but their home turf or in selected territories their nations control. But now you can open your business's doors to global commerce. Here are the tools for doing that:

Translation and localization

When it comes to website content, English remains the primary language of the internet. W3Techs reports that over 50 percent of web content is written in English. But, according to Internet World Stats, only a quarter of internet users are English speakers. If you're looking to truly expand the global reach of your online business, speaking the language of your next target market could be a good place to start. Typically, this is done through translation and localization.

Though sometimes used interchangeably, translation and localization, also known as L10n, are actually two markedly different processes. When applied to a website, translation involves converting written content from one language to another. While translation is an essential facet of localization, "localization" specifically typically tailors many more aspects of a website to its target market...

5 Unexpected Social Media Platforms to Grow Your Brand Awareness

5 Unexpected Social Media Platforms to Grow Your Brand Awareness

It's no surprise that social media marketing is crucial to business growth in 2018. After all, we're living in a digital world -- one where there are 2.62 billion social media users worldwide, according to Statista. Coupled with reports that show 93 percent of marketers place a high value on social media as a business growth tool and more than 50 percent who claim it has improved their sales, I'd say every business should be allocating time, energy and resources toward social media marketing.

Related: Teens Are Increasingly Ditching Facebook. Here's How Entrepreneurs Should Respond.

However, social media marketing efforts can span far beyond the core four: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. In fact, these popular platforms see such high users yet have such stringent algorithms that it can be hard to ensure your followers see your organic content, much less that your content helps you capture new consumers.

5 Simple Job Hunting Techniques to Land Your Dream Job

5 Simple Job Hunting Techniques to Land Your Dream Job

Available research shows that more than half of people who are currently employed are considering getting a new job. Furthermore, more than half of people currently employed feel that they have just a job and not a career.

Related: How to Be Authentic in an Interview

Whether you are fresh out of college and looking for your first job, or whether you're tired of your current job and need a replacement job, some job hunting techniques are bound to give you an edge. The following are five seemingly-simple but highly effective job hunting techniques that will inch you closer to your dream job.

1. Spend more time on your resume

Your resume is likely to influence your chances of getting hired more than anything else. Research shows that the average recruiter will spend about 3.14 minutes reading your resume and will make up his/her mind about whether to hire you within the first minute of reading your resume. Consequently, 1 in 5 recruiters will reject a candidate before they've finished reading the candidate's resume.

In essence, your resume can make or break your job prospects -- which means you probably should be spending more time on it. Here are some quick tips:

  • Carefully proofread and edit your resume: research shows that 59 percent of recruiters will reject a candidate because of poor grammar or spelling errors -- since this is usually indicative of sloppiness and a candidate's lack of attention to details.
  • Keep it simple and to the point: Avoid trying to be too clever. Just go straight to the point and keep things simple. Research shows that more than half of recruiters reject candidates due to overuse of cliches or trying to be too clever. The same goes for design: more than 40 percent of recruiters reject candidates due to too much design, inappropriate fonts, clip art images, or emojis. Just keep it simple.

2. Employ the use of multiple resumes

Many job seekers are of the impression that a resume has to be fixed and consistent across all job search efforts. Not necessarily. If you haven't been using it yet, having multiple resumes could give you an edge when it comes to getting your dream job...

How to Apply and Optimize Your Algorithm When You're Ready to Run With AI

How to Apply and Optimize Your Algorithm When You're Ready to Run With AI

Amazon's recently launched SageMaker artificial intelligence service is an exciting new development, but the program doesn't do it all. There's a distinct gap between innovative AI technology that exists and AI solutions that will help drive business results in your specific case. Using products such as SageMaker is like having a brand-new Tesla Model S: It's an awesome car, but it's a giant electric paperweight if you don't know how to drive.

We discussed "walking" with AI in a prior Entrepreneur article; now it's time to hit the ground running. At Manifold, we work with clients using a method called "Lean AI." Our method is inspired by many other popular processes, including human-centered design by IDEOagile software development, the Lean Startup methodology and CRISP-DM. Lean AI has six steps: understand, engineer, model, acquire feedback, deploy and validate. Here, I'll focus on three key pieces that any entrepreneur will need to follow to optimize AI...

Changing Careers: Starting a New Career in 30's

Changing Careers: Starting a New Career in 30's

Finding a new career and planning a career change can be intimidating. There are many people who are hesitant to take the leap and stay stuck in the same career even if they hate what they are doing. However, it is of no use staying miserable and not taking any action even after realizing that you would be better off doing something else.

One of the main reasons for which people in 30's are forced to think about changing careers is that they feel unhappy and disengaged at their work. There are many who don't feel passionate about their work and find themselves in roles which don't interest them. This, indeed, is the result of career choices people are made to make at a very young age when they are teenagers. Obvious as it may be, the priorities of a teenager and adult can be drastically different, thereby, encouraging people to adopt career changes...

The Sooner You Get Your First AI Job, the Better for Your Career

The Sooner You Get Your First AI Job, the Better for Your Career

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping society as we know it in both business and consumer realms. Early use cases with Alexa, autonomous vehicles and AI-driven supply chains provide just a glimpse of the disruption that AI is poised to deliver in the near future and for years to come.

Yet despite all the AI hype and initial successes, it remains in its infancy. That makes now the ideal time for young people to build the knowledge, skill sets and connections they need to capitalize on the fast-growing market for AI jobs and build a strong AI career.

One reason is simply practical. Gartner predicts that AI may eliminate 1.8 million jobsby 2020, yet is on track to create 2.3 million new positions. It clearly makes sense to map out an AI career path as new roles emerge that focus on problem-solving, collaboration and strategic decision-making...

How to Be Authentic in an Interview

How to Be Authentic in an Interview

One of the most common questions I am asked by candidates who are seeking interview coaching is about how they can show their true self in what seems like an unnatural setting -- the job interview.  Oftentimes candidates feel pressured to "put on a show" and manufacture the perfect answers, trying to predict what the interviewer wants to hear.

Related: 6 Signs You've Found the Right Candidate

Not only is this futile, but it also defeats the purpose of an interview -- to show your best, authentic self. An interviewer is less concerned about how "perfect" your answer is, and more interested in understanding three core aspects about you:

  1. Will they enjoy working with you?
  2. Are you genuinely excited about the opportunity?
  3. Do you have the core capabilities to do the job?

The best way to answer these questions for the interviewer is to present your authentic, true self, and here are some techniques to help you just do that.

1. Clearly highlight the aspects of the job that excite you most.

One of the most common mistakes candidates make when answering the question "Tell me about yourself" is they list out their prior roles and accomplishments like a set of transactions. In doing so, you are missing out on an opportunity to talk about why you pursued certain opportunities and what excited you about those roles. For example, a marketer explaining that they enjoyed engaging with customers while building out campaign strategies will be more compelling than simply stating they have worked on 10 marketing campaigns.

Moreover, talking about aspects of the job you enjoy will naturally bring out your enthusiasm, and generate a smile and positive body language, while also humanizing the conversation.

2. Be precise about your interest in the company and role.

One of the most common interview questions candidates get asked is why they are interested in the opportunity.  And, often, candidates will answer by simply praising the company in a vague manner. For example, "I think your company is doing great things in the industry." An imprecise answer like this lacks thoughtfulness, and can also be construed as ingenuine...

3 Marketing Mistakes That Kill Tech Startups

Despite media headlines claiming that startups are leaving Silicon Valley, the San Francisco Bay Area is still a hotbed of innovation. Out of the 10 companies to reach a $1-billion valuation the fastest, eight are based in San Francisco, according to PitchBook.

Just a decade ago, we could not imagine renting out someone's home, hailing a cab or chatting on video with friends in other parts of the world -- all with a single tap on our smartphones. Yet the Airbnbs, Ubers and Facebooks of the tech world work hard to make these tech dreams a reality.
